What to do in Chennai?

Tamil Nadu is the land of the Tamils and it has a history that dates back to several thousand years. It is where traditions and culture blend and continue to live in harmony. The state abounds in ancient monuments and temples and each has its own story of religious, artistic and cultural accomplishment and specialty waiting to be heard.

Chennai - formerly known as Mardas - with a population of over 7 million, is the capital of Tamil Nadu and the fourth largest metropolitan city in India. The city was established in the 17th century by the British, who developed it into a major urban centre and naval base. The city is served by a large, modern international airport and two major ports. Most international airlines like British Airways, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, Air India, Sri Lankan Airlines and Malaysian Airlines fly directly to Chennai from various cities across the world. Chennai is connected to the rest of India by five national highways and two railway terminals. Over 35 countries have consulates in Chennai.

Chennai hosts a large cultural event, the annual Madras Music Season, which includes performances by hundreds of artists. The city has a vibrant film industry and theatre scene and is a centre for Bharatanatyam, a riveting classical dance form. Chennai is also known for its multiple sporting venues, hosts an International Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) event, the Chennai Open and an integral part of the IPL Cricket Tournament with our very own team, the Chennai Super Kings.

Chennai provides easy access to many southern resorts with beautiful sandy beaches and spa facilities. Furthermore, the former French Colony - Pondicherry - and many interesting tourist sites in South India and Kerala are within easy access. Chennai is also famous for its Kancheepuram hand woven silk sarees, contemporary and traditional artwork, antiques, jewellery, and stone sculptures.
